Our Therapists

At the SWAN Project, we primarily work with trainee therapists. This enables us to offer long-term, low-cost therapy while recognising that there are no quick fixes for the underlying issues associated with addiction.

All of our therapists are carefully selected and interviewed by our Clinical Lead and Deputy Clinical Lead. We ensure that every therapist works from a place of compassion and is well-equipped to provide safe, effective support.

By the time they qualify, trainee therapists will typically have completed around four years of professional training. As part of this, they undertake placements to gain hands-on experience.

Although still in training, all of our therapists have been assessed as fit to practise by their training institutions. In addition, therapists receive specialist training from us, focusing on addiction and trauma-informed approaches. This helps foster the SWAN Project’s culture of compassion, inclusivity, and breaking down “them and us” barriers. Each therapist brings both clinical expertise and valuable life experience.

We usually have around 60 therapists on placement at any one time, reflecting a diverse range of backgrounds, identities, and perspectives.

To ensure high-quality support, trainee counsellors work with a maximum of four clients per week. They receive regular supervision from experienced SWAN Project supervisors with specialist knowledge in addiction, as well as additional supervision through their training providers.

All therapists are fully insured and are members of accredited professional bodies. As an organisation, we adhere to the BACP Code of Ethics.
